I'll give you this, Brokeback Mountain is the Best Gay Movie of the last year. However, it don't think it's the Best Picture of 2005. There is no doubt that the nominations for Oscar will flow in Ang Lee's way in the coming weeks, but I honestly think that this movie is slightly overrated due to the it's casual handling of the gay factor. If you aren't shocked by two men kissing, for the record I'm not, then really what it comes down to is that this movie is a historical portayal of closeted gay men in the 1960's Wyoming and it plays out really slowly, so bring a catheter if you can. I'm not saying I was bored, and I don't think Sydney was bored either. What? You think I'm going to a gay cowboy movie while the AFC Championship Game is on without a female escort? Anyway, like I was saying, the movie is kind of slow. Wyoming is beautiful to look at, and I'm guessing for the ladies so are Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhal, but it's not quite enough for me to stay connected. Instead I was focusing on bad wigs and horrible facial hair. The acting was solid, Heath did a great job and I was worried about him pulling this off. Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway both shed some of their teenage pigeon-holing as well as their clothes. Jake had a tougher time "transforming" into a 39 year old, but was still solid. I guess I just found the material a little dry. Usually I cry at the slightest emotional tug in a movie, yet with this one I didn't even get upset. Maybe that's the direction? In any case, I'd still recommend the movie to others with the caveat that there is some need for movies like this to widen the exposure of homosexuals in the world. Even if this one is just good and not great.
